A high-ranking Russian general has been fatally wounded following an blast in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The attack occurred on Monday morning when an IED planted beneath a vehicle detonated, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
The committee indicated that one possible explanation suggests the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has not issued a comment.
Site of the Blast
Personnel have been sent to the scene, which is understood to be in a south district of the city.
Reports indicate the explosion happened in a parking area close to a residential building.
Pattern of Targeted Attacks
Since the onset of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military personnel have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.
This new event follows other notable incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a explosive concealed on a scooter was set off from a distance.
While a Ukrainian source earlier linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are not formally acknowledged as a matter of standard practice.
Hostilities has increasingly seen clandestine operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.
The probe into General Sarvarov's death remains underway.
