Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Passing on unneeded presents could be seen as somewhat rude – except if it's done the right way.
A Philanthropic Auction
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 presents received by her by international figures on official trips. The diverse haul reportedly features items such as a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
The presents, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Rome-based auction firm. The specific date has not been finalized, but the aim is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with all funds raised donated to non-profit organizations.
Palazzo Chigi Collection
The items are said to be locked away in a repository on the upper level of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been sitting unused indefinitely.
The full gift list is yet to be made public, but some insight were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was submitted to lawmakers. The query centered on whether a legal value limit was being followed. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.
An International Assortment of Presents
Among the items:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
- A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- An assortment including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," observers have said.
Political Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, mostly from within her party, with garnering support from global statesmen and positioning Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.
This unique auction represents a unconventional way to manage the diplomatic artifacts that accumulate during a time in office.
